An explanation of power line networking
FDN specialise in the technology (known as powerline communcations) that allows a data signal to be transmitted through a normal set of power lines, such as the ones in your home or office.
Usually broadband signals and other data signals are piped around a building using a specially installed cable network. This is sometimes referred to as an ethernet. Setting up such a network can be costly and time consuming, not to mention the disruption to the normal operation of that building.
Power line networking technology allows the already existing power cabling in your building to carry the data signals for your network. This has limitless possible applications and means that the cost of setting up such a network is massively reduced, as is any inconvenience to the people using the building.
In some cases Broadband over Powerlines or BPL is the only real option. For example listed buildings are limited in how much work can be carried out. Ripping out walls to lay new cables is simply not possible. Similarly ships and boats present challenging environments in which to set up a data or broadband network. The structure of the ship means retro fitting a new cable network is difficult and expensive. Wifi is subject to interference from the structure and is therefore not viable.
Broadband over power line technology would be a good solution in both these cases. Indeed it is an increasingly sensible choice for many business owners looking for a cost effective means of delivering a dependable data network, this includes broadband, but can also carry voice and video signals, such as a CCTV netwrok for example.
Powerline Communications is variously known as powerline telecoms, powerline networks and powerline internet. More defintions are here.
