FDN undertake AMI testing for DNO

Wideband PLC performance for Automated Metering

FDN have won and successfully completed a contract to demonstrate and validate the performance of wideband Power Line Communications (PLC) as a suitable communications medium for an Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

The contract was managed by EA Technology Ltd (EATL) on behalf of a UK Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

EATL initially contacted FDN to establish details of the services we could offer their client (the Distribution Network Operator) regarding their trial of wideband PLC technology.

Following acceptance by the DNO of FDN's proposal, local project plans were put in place to provide points of connection at both the substations and customer premises to be used.

The trial (which took place in April in Southern England) was extremely successful and used the latest AMI PLC firmware from FDN, demonstrating and validating the ease and performance with which wideband power line communications can connect to multiple homes on both Underground and Overhead networks from a single substation.

Freedom Digital Networks provided and installed the PLC architecture and then worked with the DNO and EATL to quantify and validate throughput, simulating metering file transfer and demonstrating real time concurrent communications with multiple properties over distances exceeding 450 metres. Throughput speeds demonstrated were far in excess of narrowband technologies, opening doors to wider application possibilities.

Designed to create a "mesh" network of up to 300 nodes in a single network, FDN's AMI solution can be used for a range of  "telemetry like" applications, on both external and internal power networks.

By using FND's AMI solution, customer applications ranging from Metering to Monitoring and Condition Based Maintenance to Asset Tracking can be quickly and easily deployed.
