FDN launches internet access over the electricity network to the UK education sector
31 January 2007 - Freedom Digital Networks (FDN) has launched a
breakthrough technology in the UK, that delivers internet
connectivity via a building's electricity network, offering
businesses and government organisations an affordable and reliable
alternative to re-cabling or WiFi.
The FDN solution uses a building's existing electrical wiring
to effectively "flood" every room in the building with a
digital network - transforming every electrical point into an
internet-enabled data port. End users can then either connect via a
normal LAN cable or via wireless. Even light sockets can be used to
create access points or to connect added value devices, for
example, lights that also act as security cameras.
To rewire a large site such as a Secondary School in order to
supply internet access more widely can be expensive and intrusive.
Many buildings are also unsuitable for wireless connectivity due to
their construction or use. The FDN solution avoids the need for
invasive re-cabling - an important consideration for many old or
listed buildings - and gives flexibility to connect to the internet
anywhere in the building.
Cost efficiency and the need for more advanced teaching tools has
become a major priority for schools. The FDN solution offers:
- Access to network resources - including the main server, printers, computer files and documents - from anywhere in the school;
- Secure and controlled access to the internet;
- Increased flexibility of teaching aids, including the use of the internet with interactive whiteboards;
- VOIP telephone system to allow free internal and external calls as well as aiding communication
- Installation of cameras for higher levels of security
Mark Cant, chairman, FDN, commented:
"Internet connectivity is now essential in many areas of life
today. Unfortunately, the majority of the buildings we use and live
in were not designed with this in mind, and simply do not lend
themselves to either wireless or cable networking. Freedom Digital
Networks enables people in any building with electricity throughout
to enjoy the same high-speed, reliable connectivity that even the
most modern of buildings provide. And at no extra cost over
traditional cable networks."
"Perhaps, even more excitingly, our technology creates a leap
forward, allowing the innovative use of Internet connected devices.
Security cameras in light sockets, for example."
This technology is implemented and working in hundreds of
installations across continental Europe and now available in the
UK. It gives the education sector access to the next generation of
online communications.
